In 2017, adults in the United States had visited a museum or gallery

For 2017, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences reported only 24% of adults in the United States had visited a museum or gallery. That same year, the National Endowment for the Arts reported 106.8 million people attended a performing arts event, with poetry/literary readings up 76% from 2012.

#ArtFindsUs provides the platform to engage all Denver residents, from the artists to longtime arts supporters to those who may have never stepped into a gallery or attended an arts event. We aim to add meaning to our city at this time and to be freely accessible to all.

About Us

In late March, when mass cancellations were occurring in response to COVID-19 and artists and art organizations were pivoting their programming to online platforms, three individuals were having similar thoughts about art accessibility and asking themselves, “What If?”

The #ArtFindsUs initiative, a partnership between K Contemporary Gallery Denver, Holly Porterfield, and Athena Project, was born to contribute to the economic livelihood of local artists and the Denver community. A Redline survey reported due to COVID-19, artists have already lost an average of $3500. #ArtFindsUs compensates artists and provides all of Denver with accessibility to the work, reinforcing how art is instrumental, especially during these economically challenging times, to uplift our community and reinforce our shared existence.

Similarly to food banks, #ArtFindsUs will provide nourishment, a positive stimulus to Denver communities. When food is available and shared, stress is reduced and community reinforced. In that vein, our goal is to bring people to their front yards or windows, connecting them with images or sounds that will resonate, filling them with hope. It will not compromise anyone’s health, is freely accessible, and is in motion. Like jazz, this is improvisation, an opportunity to create together, meeting the needs of this historic time.

Communities hardest hit as well as organizations providing services to women will be included on the routes. Of the modes of transportation, two featured visual art, one was a mobile stage with performers, and one shared music via the backs of pedicabs. While determining the routes, prioritization was given to communities hardest hit during COVID-19 as well as routes where organizations serving women are located. K Contemporary and Athena Project curated the project and funded artists, placing emphasis on work by women artists and artists of color. In advance of the third Thursday, #ArtsFindsUs interviewed the artists and elevated their work and their voices on social media platforms to broaden community reach. In addition to the sharing out of art forms, #ArtFindsUs also wants to ensure the stories of artists are captured to reveal their experience during this historic time.

We want to make sure artists are uplifted and they know we will support them however we can.

Doug Kacena

K Contemporary Denver

It will be a long time before artists and audiences will be able to connect again…..what if we brought the art to them so the energy exchange and empathy that’s created by experiencing art as a community can sustain our connection to each other and the world around us?

Angela Astle

Athena Project

Like the Mississippi River, the once highway for the spread of jazz, what if we share art up and down the streets of Denver?

Holly Porterfield

Community Outreach

These three individuals understood that art always finds a way.

Routes

All routes are subject to vary slightly depending on the evening’s traffic and weather.  We appreciate your understanding!

Support Our Artists

#ArtFindsUs exists to compensate, uplift, and amplify artists, placing emphasis on women artists and artists of color. Our desire is to be accessible to all, to spread joy and to safely engage in an uplifting exchange of energy between artists and our city.

Through 6th Clothing Co.’s Cause Collection, we are able to offer #ArtFindsUs merchandise and 6th Clothing Co. will donate 50% of the profits to the #ArtsFindsUs cause. Of those proceeds, 100% will go to supporting the artists participating in the project.

Partners

New Orleans native and jazz drummer, Herlin Riley said, “The street is the beat.  The beat embodies the rhythm. The rhythm embodies the culture.” #ArtsFindsUs looks forward to traveling the streets, strengthening current ties and building new relationships with neighborhood associations, locally owned businesses, non-profits, the for-profit sector, and individuals….and we welcome support from others!

*At Athena Project, we believe that “women” means many things and can be a complicated term. We recognize that the term “women” does not automatically include all aspects of the gender spectrum. We want to create a safer space for the expression and growth for all women, non-binary, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
