Starting in January of 2022, we will be exploring and uplifting new plays written primarily by women playwrights through our Read & Rant program! Each month, we will feature one to two scripts that have never been professionally produced and invite the playwright to join our conversation. Guided by a dramaturg, we invite you to share your constructive comments, thoughts, and affirmations in order to aid in the development process of the piece. Curious to learn more about new play development and the role of a dramaturg? Join us each month to hear from a professional dramaturg about their past experiences and favorite new play development practices.
This month we will be featuring two of our four Plays In Progress Playwrights: Meghan Maugeri and Jenny Stafford.
Meghan Maugeri’s Polar Bear Society:
The Polar Bear Society convenes virtually with three teens who live in different parts of the country but share one thing in common: a bipolar diagnosis. Moxie, Treble, and Gravity tackle typical coming-of-age challenges, with the added complexity of a chronic mental health condition. The unlikely friends work through their up and downs together in this compassionate and often funny play about finding humor, friendship, and hope in times of adversity.
Jenny Stafford’s Secret Hour:
Thirty-five year old Kate is a professor of Ethics, with only one rule for her students–do not lie to her. She asks her students to answer the question, “Is your greatest ethical responsibility to yourself, or others?” However, as Kate and her husband struggle to have a baby, she finds herself unable to answer it as she faces an ethical dilemma of her own. A new play exploring womanhood, motherhood, and the space between right and wrong.
After you register for a session, you will receive information on how to access or where to purchase our featured script(s).
