2024 Read and Rant

August 19, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm MDT
Read and Rant
Athena Project’s Read & Rant program seeks to combine the sharing of theatrical work with the wider public and the new play development aspects of our former Plays In Progress Series while also fostering collaboration between playwrights and dramaturgs. Think book club for plays! Learn what makes a good script, discuss how it affects us, and explore the ways it links to the larger world. This monthly free offering to the community aims to raise awareness of the under-representation of women’s stories on stage.

Each month, we read two new and unproduced scripts selected from a nationwide call for submissions and typically meet every third Monday online via Zoom to discuss the works. Join us to converse with invited playwrights who bring an in-depth knowledge of the works and theatrical writing at large. Guided by a dramaturg, we also invite you to share your constructive comments, thoughts, and affirmations in order to aid in the development process of the pieces.

This month we will be featuring two playwrights selected from our Read & Rant lottery:

Lindsey Walko’s Set to Private
An influencer and her creative director are best friends. An influencer and her creative director are sworn enemies. Isabel and Grace try to navigate their tumultuous relationships with boys, with the internet, with themselves, with each other, with NYU.
Lindsey WalkoLindsey Walko – Is a Boston-based artist with a focus in theater, film and TV. Her writing has been seen at Tiger’s Heart Players, Southern Methodist University, Boston University, and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, heard on the podcast Iris. Currently, Lindsey works full-time for Boston Ballet in their artistic department and will be attending Columbia University in the fall for her MFA in playwriting.
Arianna Rose’s The Lesser Leyendecker
“Family First” is the motto of the real-life Leyendecker siblings Mary, Joe and Frank. When brothers Frank and Joe find fame as illustrators in the early 1900s, a stranger insinuates himself into their close-knit relationship and threatens everything the three siblings have created. As Joe’s star ascends, and his creation Arrow Collar Man grips the nation, Frank’s self-esteem and work output descends, despite the assistance of his muse Livvy and friendly neighbor. Both brothers were equally talented. Both brothers were homosexual in a time when that was kept behind closed doors. Art and addiction, imagination and illusion meet in this highly theatrical memory play, spanning late 1890s through 1924.
AriannaArianna Rose – Is an award-winning playwright and musical theatre writer, produced in thirty-five states and ten countries. Recipient of the MAC Song of the Year Award, the York Theatre NEO Award, and various playwright awards across the country. 2022 Participant: Kennedy Center Playwriting Intensive, William Inge Play Festival. Published by Applause Books and Smith & Kraus. Arianna teaches “Writing the Short-form Play” for the Dramatists Guild Institute. Adjunct Theatre Professor at Broward College.
