Read and Rant (6/21)

Read & Rant is Athena Project’s book club exploring plays written primarily by women. We read one or two scripts or ancillary materials during the month and meet every third Monday online via Zoom, to discuss the works. Learn what makes a good script, discuss how it affects us, and explore the ways it links to the larger world. Converse with invited guests who bring an in-depth knowledge base. This monthly free offering to the community aims to raise awareness of the under-representation of women’s stories on stage.

June’s Read & Rant will allow for a discussion around the Plays In Progress Series (PIP) weekend we just finished June 5 and 6. Several of our readers  attended the full weekend of plays and even those who weren’t able to attend or only saw one or two table readings can participate in further discussion about the new play development process.

Our discussion will be centered on what comes next for these scripts, the behind-the-scenes analysis of how we selected these scripts and what is the difference between table readings, concert readings and workshops. We will also discuss generally other ways scripts are developed and how these particular scripts benefited from casting authentically. This will truly be an opportunity to rant or maybe even raven about new works!  Hope you will join us!

1. What changes were obvious in the play that had occurred since the table reading vs. the revision?
2. What were parts you didn’t remember from before?
3. Why “cutting” is so difficult, yet so important?
