Read & Rant (4/19)

April 19, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm MDT

Read & Rant is Athena Project’s book club exploring plays written primarily by women. We read one or two scripts or ancillary materials during the month and meet every third Monday online via Zoom, to discuss the works. Learn what makes a good script, discuss how it affects us, and explore the ways it links to the larger world. Converse with invited guests who bring an in-depth knowledge base. This monthly free offering to the community aims to raise awareness of the under-representation of women’s stories on stage.

Spring has sprung as we move into the month of April, and with it a fresh play to discuss! Athena Project’s upcoming Read & Rant meeting will feature a collaboration with Theater 29 to highlight playwright and arts mentor Felice Locker and her celebrated script MUD SEASON, O’NEILL 2021 Semi-Finalist, and BAPF 2020 Finalist. In MUD SEASON, Jane, resilient but restless, decamps to rural Colorado where she thinks hard work and even harder weather are the answer to almost everything. While enduring sliding mud and her slippery sister, Jane, who is disabled, embarks on a journey with mythical time travelers and a magical eagle to discover her place in the American West where the environmental challenges of intensive fracking are omnipresent.

A work-in-progress, MUD SEASON is a full-length dramedy with fantastical elements and a mostly female cast. The play examines broad themes of disability and ecological disaster alongside intimate relationships to the land, between sisters, and among neighbors, past and present. Join us as we Read & Rant about this engaging tale, as well as the social aspects that come along with it.

Playwright Bio:
Felice Locker is a Colorado playwright whose plays combine a confrontation of social and political issues with poetic language that explores the personal. The Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company selected Felice for the 2020-2021 core Playwrights Group, a year-long residency. She is also part of Theatre 29 Denver’s inaugural CoLAB 2020-2021. Her play Pied Noir was a Semi-Finalist at the 2017 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and was translated into French. Mud Season is a Finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2020, Playwrights Foundation, and a Semi-Finalist at the 2021 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference.
