2024 Leer y Despotricar

El programa Read & Rant del Proyecto Athena pretende combinar el intercambio de obras teatrales con el público en general y los aspectos de desarrollo de nuevas obras de nuestro anterior ciclo Plays In Progress, fomentando al mismo tiempo la colaboración entre dramaturgos y dramaturgos. Piense en un club de lectura de obras de teatro. Aprenda en qué consiste un buen guión, discuta cómo nos afecta y explore sus vínculos con el mundo en general. Esta oferta mensual gratuita a la comunidad pretende concienciar sobre la escasa representación de las historias de mujeres en los escenarios.

Cada mes, leemos dos guiones nuevos e inéditos seleccionados a partir de una convocatoria nacional y solemos reunirnos cada tercer lunes en línea a través de Zoom para debatir las obras. Únase a nosotros para conversar con dramaturgos invitados que aportan un profundo conocimiento de las obras y de la escritura teatral en general. Guiados por un dramaturgo, también le invitamos a compartir sus comentarios constructivos, pensamientos y afirmaciones para ayudar en el proceso de desarrollo de las obras.

Donna Latham’ s YELLA JACK

Yella Jack ravage the city of Memphis. Can science and faith together conquer these vile, twin plagues? When most white folks in Memphis up sticks and flee after yellow fever, a “stranger’s disease,” strikes, determined residents hunker down to stay alive in the purgatorial city. They form a found family to nurse the sick, keep the city afloat, embrace new opportunities—and scheme revenge. Jack, a serial-killing embodiment of contagion, collects trophies from victims—earbobs, rings, pearls, and a precious symbol of humanity. When Sister Gregory fails to return after nursing fever folk in Shanty Town, the found family fears the worst. All pray for frost. As ever.

Nabra Nelson’s Memory Lane is a Desert Road

After her father travels to Sudan on a potentially life-threatening journey, Fatima spends her spring break from college searching through his boxes of photos in the garage. Her father, Mark, is a professional photojournalist for over 30 years, working primarily in the Middle East and Africa covering wars, famines, and other international tragedies. Fatima, his college-aged daughter, knows very little about his decades of life-threatening work, so she searches through boxes of photos and negatives for answers. The boxes include pivotal historic moments and unfathomable human suffering intermixed with family trips across the world. As she explores a life in photos, she learns more about him, as well as herself. This memory play is an exploration of how the past informs the future, how parents’ lives intersect with their children’s, how history and memory clash, and the search for answers to unknown questions in dusty boxes.
