Leer y Despotricar - 17 de octubre de 2022

17 de octubre de 2022 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm MDT

Leer y despotricar

Starting in Enero of 2022, we will be exploring and uplifting new plays written primarily by women playwrights through our Read & Rant program! Each month, we will feature one to two scripts that have never been professionally produced and invite the playwright to join our conversation.

Guided by a dramaturg, we invite you to share your constructive comments, thoughts, and affirmations in order to aid in the development process of the piece. Curious to learn more about new play development and the role of a dramaturg? Join us each month to hear from a professional dramaturg about their past experiences and favorite new play development practices.

This month we will be featuring two playwrights selected from our Read & Rant lottery: Elle Thoni and Mollie Gordon.

Elle Thoni’s Woolly:
Eminent evolutionary biologist Dr. Robin Slater is spearheading a woolly mammoth de-extinction project at her university. As she prepares to debunk popular myths about de-extinction in her upcoming Ted Talk, her partner Theo is called away to be with his dying father. In the liminal space between life and death, extinction and de-extinction, intellect and intuition, time begins to unhinge for Robin and her child, Sammy, who suddenly find themselves lost in a mysterious tundra that can only be described as “Siberia.” Inspired by real science, Woolly poetically explores our collective grief and anxiety in the face of an unknown environmental future.

Mollie Gordon’s If It Weren’t for the Women, We’d Still Be Stuck in the Desert:
Naomi Bensoussan is a fifth-year rabbinical student hard at work on her thesis about Rahab, the Torah’s favorite sex worker. Naomi’s journey to complete the project is aided and interfered with by several patriarchs and matriarchs, a potential lover, and of course, Rahab herself.
